Internships at GWE

Mar 2, 2020 | Staff News

Matt Strain, a Master of Engineering Geology student at the University of Auckland worked as an intern at GWE Consulting Engineers over the 2019/20 summer and this is what he had to say about his work experience.

“I was lucky enough to be an intern at GWE over the summer university break working in the Geotech team. I was kindly welcomed with a morning tea before getting straight into the field on Waiheke Island for a site investigation. In my first week, I was set with meaningful work and getting exposed to soils all over wider Auckland.

From there, I have gained experience on a range of projects across the company, including stormwater and wastewater with which I have had no previous experience. This has allowed me to diversify my skillset and contribute to the company in more ways than just my geotechnical background. My favourite aspect of working at GWE has been seeing a project right through to completion; starting with the site investigation and taking it through to the final report. I have felt supported with the mixture of youth and experience in the office, my colleagues are always there for me when I need guidance.

Following my internship, I will be working part-time at GWE while I finish my Master’s degree.”

Outside of work, cricket takes up a lot of Matt’s time playing at North Shore Cricket Club, where he plays as a left-arm spin bowler. He also enjoys hiking and exploring New Zealand when he gets the chance.
